A two week summer vacation!
First we traveled from Deventer to Amboise in the Loire region.
Chateau Amboise is where Mary Stewart, queen of Scots spent her childhood years in order to take refuge. Her father the king died when she was just an infant making her a target for the opposition. Her mother betrothed Mary to Francis, dauphin of France. Chateau Amboise was Mary’s childhood home.
Amboise is furthermore known for Da Vinci’s home in his later life. He is buried close to Chateau Amboise. The town is exceptionally beautiful! Small but charming.
Our second destination was Tours, a wonderful French City with an old city center with lots of terraces and a great atmosphere. From here, we visited Chateau Chambord, one. Of Frances biggest castles. It was exceptional to behold with its great attention to detail. As one of the main attractions in France, it was very busy so we didn’t stay too long.
The best place we visited in the Loire region, is Chateau Chaumont, a castle with a rich history. It belonged to Queen Catherine de Medici, who gave it to her rival, her husbands mistress, Diane de Poitiers. The castle is a real fairytale castle situated beautifully adjacent the Loire river.
We stayed at a charming smaller castle where we even came across a male Luna (my Yorkshire terrier/Maltese dog).
After the Loire, we moved on to the Dordogne area, close to Bergerac. I remember this place from my childhood; where I used to go canoeing and off in search of lizards, snakes and other reptiles. Nature here is wonderful! We spent a magnificent week here enjoying the views, nature, animals and some local castles. We also visited Perigieux, Sarlat, Montignac, Limeuil and the grottes de Rouffignac and Le Gouffre de Proumeyssac. We stayed close to Bergerac with two wonderful hosts; a British couple called Liz and Graham. Liz is an artist and redecorates and restores old castles to former glory. An interest and passion I share with her for sure! Graham is an avid Citroen Deux Chevaux fan with a great sense of humor. I’d love to go back there some day!
